Hammon Criticizes “Out of Control” Physics in Aces vs. Fever Series
Aces coach Becky Hammon has expressed concern about the physical intensity in the semi-final series against the Fever, describing it as “out of control.” This occurred after Las Vegas’ victory in the second game, tying the series at 1-1 with a score of 90-68.Hammon pointed out that her assistants, coming from the NBA, agree that this level of play would not be tolerated in the men’s league, where fights could break out. The second game was characterized by a high number of fouls, with 41 in total, including 16 in the third quarter. In the first game, 27 fouls were recorded. The Aces shot 21 free throws, while the Fever had 15. Previously, Hammon had criticized the first-round series between the Fever and the Dream, calling it a “football game”. Fever coach Stephanie White also expressed her frustration with the officiating, arguing that it hinders the flow of the game. The players from both teams acknowledged the physical nature of the playoffs. Lexie Hull of the Fever, who scored 15 points, commented on the physical intensity of the series. NaLyssa Smith of Las Vegas, with 18 points and 7 rebounds, highlighted the need to match the energy in every game.“You can push and grab a receiver in the NFL for the first five meters, but in the W you can do it across the entire court,” Hammon commented. “Putting two hands on someone like that should be an automatic foul. There is no freedom of movement, no freedom. And I’m not saying we don’t foul, we do too, but I’m saying it’s out of control.”
