Matt Fitzpatrick’s Parents Absent from Ryder Cup for Specific Reasons

The golfer Matt Fitzpatrick has confirmed that his parents will not be attending the Ryder Cup in New York. The decision is due, in part, to previous experiences with the behavior of the public at this type of event. The European team, of which Fitzpatrick is a part, is expected to face a hostile reception from the local public at Bethpage Black, where the competition against the United States will begin this Friday. Fitzpatrick, who will participate in his fourth Ryder Cup, was already booed at the 2021 event at Whistling Straits. This situation influenced his parents’ decision not to attend this time.

“They didn’t have a great experience at Whistling Straits… But the other thing is that both parents will play next week at the Dunhill. They really didn’t want to ruin that experience either, because obviously it’s special to have that”.

In addition to past experience, the participation of his parents in the upcoming Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, where his other son Alex will also compete, influenced his decision. Fitzpatrick explained that the combination of travel, an intense week, and the desire to enjoy a good event were key factors. Despite the absence of his parents, the golfer remains optimistic. The athlete has stated that, despite being booed during practice, he will not let this affect him. “I’m from Sheffield, so that’s a good start,” he affirmed. Fitzpatrick acknowledges the importance of the fans in this event and the opportunity to play at the highest level in front of them.

At 31 years old, Fitzpatrick stood out by winning the U.S. Open in 2022. Although his performance in the Ryder Cup has not been the best, with only one point in eight participations, the golfer remains focused. Fitzpatrick concluded by saying that his goal is to continue qualifying for the teams and improve his performance in the competition.
