New York Liberty Not Renewing Sandy Brondello’s Contract

The New York Liberty franchise announced the decision not to renew the contract of coach Sandy Brondello, just four days after being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.

“It has been a privilege to coach the New York Liberty these past four years. Bringing the first championship to New York will always be the most incredible feeling. I wish the team and the organization more success in the future”, expressed Brondello.

Sources close to the management indicated that the goal for the season was the championship, which led to the decision not to exercise the contract renewal option for Brondello.

“We would like to thank Sandy Brondello for her lasting impact. Sandy finishes her time in New York as the winningest coach in franchise history, and she led us to unprecedented heights as the first head coach to take the Liberty to a championship. We wish Sandy the best in her next chapter,” said General Manager Jonathan Kolb.

After achieving the first WNBA championship for the Liberty last year, the team faced challenges due to injuries to key players like Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones, and Sabrina Ionescu. Despite obtaining the fifth position in the postseason, they were defeated in the first round by the Phoenix Mercury in three games. Brondello was hired in December 2021 and accumulated a record of 107-53 in four seasons. Brondello is expected to be considered for other coaching vacancies in the league.
