In a move that shakes up the team’s structure, the Miami Dolphins are actively seeking to trade star cornerback Jalen Ramsey, as announced by General Manager Chris Grier in a press conference.
Strategic Decision
Grier, without going into details about the specific reasons behind the decision, clarified that Ramsey did not request a trade or a salary renegotiation. The possible departure of Ramsey, a key player in the defense, has been considered by the team for several weeks. Grier argued that this decision could be crucial for the team’s success, both in the present and in the future.
“After several weeks of internal conversations and with Jalen and his representation, we decided it was best for all parties involved,” Grier said. “These decisions are not taken lightly, and many hours of work and discussion have been invested. In the end, Jalen did not request the trade.”

Although it’s not clear if the exchange will materialize before the next NFL draft, Ramsey’s departure would generate a clear need at the cornerback position.
Defensive Outlook
Kader Kohou, who is shaping up to be the starting slot cornerback, could be key. The team also has Artie Burns, Ethan Bonner, Storm Duck, and Jason Maitre on its roster.
The development of Cam Smith, a former second-round pick, could be pivotal for the defensive line. Grier emphasized the importance of Smith showing significant progress in the upcoming season.
“Cam Smith needs to step up, stay healthy, and be on the field,” Grier said. “He has shown flashes, but this is a very important year for him. He knows what is expected, because we can’t wait for him anymore.”

The Draft and the Future
The Dolphins hold the 13th pick in the upcoming draft and a total of 10 picks. Grier indicated that he would be willing to trade down if a suitable offer arises. However, he ruled out the possibility of a trade involving wide receiver Tyreek Hill, unless two first-round picks were offered.
Grier assured that Ramsey’s departure does not imply a team reconstruction, and that the objective is to compete and achieve sustained success.
Dolphins owner Stephen Ross issued a public statement after the team’s loss to the New York Jets in January, confirming the continuity of Grier and coach Mike McDaniel. Ross expressed his dissatisfaction with the “status quo” and emphasized the need to improve the 8-9 record in 2024.
Grier revealed that neither he nor McDaniel received an ultimatum from Ross. In addition, he highlighted the constant pressure that coaches face in the NFL.
Ramsey has already received a $4 million bonus at the beginning of the season. The team that acquires him will have to take charge of the remaining $21 million owed to him in 2025.
In March 2023, the Dolphins acquired Ramsey from the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for a third-round pick and tight end Hunter Long. Ramsey signed a restructured three-year, $55 million contract extension. Despite missing seven games, he was selected for the Pro Bowl that season. Recently, he signed a three-year, $72.3 million extension before the 2024 season. In 2024, he recorded 11 passes defended, but only two interceptions, his lowest amount since 2020.
