With this victory, Hamlin adds his 59th career win, securing his place in the second round of the playoffs. His Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, Chase Briscoe, took second place, followed by Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney, and Joey Logano, completing the top five with playoff drivers. The No. 11 team’s strategy brought Hamlin to the pits for the last time with 44 laps to go. Following a caution, Hamlin regained the lead, overtaking Brad Keselowski on the restart. This victory also represented Toyota’s 200th win in NASCAR’s premier series. Hamlin celebrated his victory with a show on the main straight, to the ovation of the crowd present at the St. Louis circuit.

They can boo me, but they can get on the train or get run over by it. I want all the noise and all the heat.

The next step for Hamlin is the September 13 race at Bristol Motor Speedway. After the race at Gateway, Shane van Gisbergen, Austin Dillon, Alex Bowman, and Josh Berry are outside the top 12. Kyle Larson, after a twelfth place at Gateway, can secure his place in the next round just by participating in Bristol. Bubba Wallace is also in a favorable position, after leading 73 laps and winning the second stage. Josh Berry will need a win at Bristol to advance, after two consecutive last-place finishes in the playoffs. Berry suffered an incident with Chase Elliott, which sent him into the wall on lap 36. Elliott apologized for the incident. Additionally, the passing of Bill Davis was announced, who won 40 races in the Cup, Xfinity, and Truck series between 1993 and 2008.
