Will Smith Out of Action: Fracture Leaves Dodgers on Alert

The Los Angeles Dodgers are facing a significant challenge. Will Smith, their star catcher, will be out for the remainder of the regular season due to a stress fracture in his right hand. Smith, who was placed on the injured list and last played on September 9, did not feel fully recovered from the injury to his throwing hand. Further examination revealed the fracture, according to manager Dave Roberts on Saturday.

“We are optimistic about his return at some point, but it is unlikely to be in the regular season,” Roberts commented. “We still have hopes that he will be available for the postseason. I think it’s good that Will and we have clarity. It was something like, ‘I don’t understand why I don’t feel well.’ Another exploration revealed the injury.”

The catcher, who was selected for the All-Star game, has had an outstanding season, batting .296 with 61 RBIs and an OPS of .901. Smith is the Dodgers’ starting catcher, who are looking to defend their World Series championship. Currently, Smith is wearing a splint and focusing on activities that don’t involve his right hand, such as running, core work, and practicing batting with his left hand. When asked about the possibility of Smith being available for the postseason, Roberts replied: “That’s up in the air. I don’t know.” Ben Rortvedt is the player expected to take on the majority of the catching responsibilities. Rortvedt was acquired by the Dodgers at the trade deadline to bolster the position, and they have been pleased with his performance in the last month.
