New European Basketball League with NBA Seal Could Start in 2027
In an announcement that has generated great expectation, NBA commissioner Adam Silver revealed that the league, in collaboration with FIBA, could launch a new basketball competition in Europe, possibly in 2027 or 2028. Although an official schedule has not yet been defined, Silver expressed optimism about the project’s viability. During a conference organized by Front Office Sports, Silver called the start in 2027 “ambitious,” but did not rule out the possibility. He highlighted that existing arenas in Europe could be used in the initial stages, while more modern infrastructure is developed.Silver also mentioned that starting the league near the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics could be a more viable option. In March, the NBA and FIBA announced their plans to establish a new European league, ending years of speculation. The project has advanced rapidly, and last month the NBA incorporated JPMorgan Chase and Raine Group to advise on finance and strategy. Silver and Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum have held positive meetings with political leaders, teams, media, and potential investors in Europe, while work continues at the league office to make the project a reality.I don’t think we want to extend it beyond 2028. The opportunity to do something like this is now.

Preliminary plans suggest that the new league would have 16 teams, although this number could change. Renowned European clubs such as Real Madrid, Fenerbahce Istanbul and Barcelona, could be part of the NBA’s plans, along with other major football brands. Currently, approximately one in six NBA players is European, including prominent figures like Nikola Jokic from Serbia and Giannis Antetokounmpo from Greece. Silver highlighted the growth of basketball worldwide, especially in Europe, where it is the second most popular sport after football, which presents a great opportunity for the development of this new league.I’d say I’m excited about this.
