Evan Engram: Injuries Hinder His Impact with the Broncos

The Denver Broncos’ search for tight end Evan Engram to be a key piece in their offense has been hampered by bad luck with injuries. Engram, whom the Broncos signed to a two-year, $23 million contract in March, was ruled out with a back injury for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers. This after he injured his calf during the second half of Denver’s Week 1 victory over the Tennessee Titans.

Engram’s back injury “arose during Sunday’s game” against the Indianapolis Colts.

Sean Payton, Broncos Coach
Engram had a reception for 12 yards on two attempts and played 25 snaps. So far this season, Engram has four receptions for 33 yards on six attempts, less in all categories than the Broncos had anticipated for their offense. The tight end position has been a problem in recent seasons, including last year, when Lucas Krull led Denver’s tight ends with 19 receptions. Across the league in 2024, 16 teams had two tight ends with more than 19 receptions and one, Cincinnati, had three. Despite Engram’s recent injuries, Payton still believes he will have an impact on the offense in the coming weeks.

Certainly, he will play an important role for us.

Linebacker Dre Greenlaw, another of the Broncos’ main free agent additions, was also ruled out on Friday with a hamstring injury. Greenlaw did not play in the preseason or in the Broncos’ first two games.
