Taylor Townsend Apologizes for Comments About Chinese Food

American tennis player Taylor Townsend has offered a public apology “from the bottom of her heart” for derogatory comments related to Chinese food. The player’s original statements, followed by her regret, came before the match between the United States and Kazakhstan at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Shenzhen, China. Townsend, 29 years old and number 1 in the world in doubles, shared videos of local dishes, including frogs and turtles, and joked about the need to “speak to Human Resources” regarding the quality of the food.

“It’s one of the things I love most about what I do, and I’ve had nothing but an incredible experience here at the tournament,” Townsend continued. “Everyone has been so kind and friendly. And what I said was not representative of that at all. And I really wanted to apologize. There’s no excuse. There are no words. And for me, I’ll just be better.” The United States will face Kazakhstan in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
