Bengals Quarterback Joe Burrow Could Need Surgery for Toe Injury
Cincinnati Bengals star quarterback Joe Burrow is dealing with a toe injury that could require surgery, according to sources close to the team.
Images of the injury to Burrow’s left foot, which he suffered in the second quarter of the 31-27 home victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars, are being reviewed by Dr. Robert Anderson, a renowned foot specialist.
If surgery is deemed necessary, Burrow is expected to be out of action for approximately three months.
Burrow was injured with 8:36 remaining in the second quarter when Jacksonville defensive end Arik Armstead tackled him. The play resulted in Burrow being underneath other players who had fallen on him.
Initially, Burrow limped while trying to get off the field. After a couple of steps, he fell to the turf. He was evaluated in the injury tent. After several minutes, he tried to walk toward the locker room, but stopped about 15 feet from the tunnel leading under the stadium, seeking help from the athletic trainers to get in.
Burrow was initially listed as questionable to return before being ruled out. He never returned to the field and used a walking boot and crutches after the game.
Bengals coach Zac Taylor had no further information on the quarterback’s status.
Instead, Jake Browning led the Bengals to a victory, capped by his 1-yard leap over the goal line with 18 seconds remaining in the game.
Burrow, the No. 1 draft pick in 2020, suffered season-ending injuries in 2020 (knee) and 2023 (wrist), causing him to miss a total of 13 games. He also played with a calf injury sustained in training camp before the 2023 campaign.
In 14 games without Burrow as their starting quarterback, the Bengals are two games below .500 and average just under 20 points per game.
The news of the injury and the possible surgery caused the Bengals’ odds of winning the Super Bowl to go from 20-1 to 30-1.
