Deatrich Wise Jr. Suffers Injury and Misses the Rest of the Season
A significant loss for the Washington Commanders. Defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. suffered a rupture of his left quadriceps and will be out for the rest of the season, according to reports.
The injury occurred during Thursday’s game, in the 27-18 loss to Green Bay. Wise will need surgery, which ends his participation in the season.
This is a tough loss for Washington’s defense, as Wise, with his size and strength, was an important addition. The Commanders had signed him to a one-year contract to bolster a defense that struggled against the run last season.
The team is also waiting to learn the severity of the injury to running back Austin Ekeler, who left the game with what the team fears is a ruptured Achilles tendon.
In addition, two other starters, receiver Noah Brown and tight end John Bates, suffered groin injuries and also had to leave the game. The severity of both injuries is not yet known.
Wise’s injury occurred in the second quarter, with just over seven minutes remaining, and the seriousness of the situation was immediately apparent. His teammates knelt on the field and, subsequently, almost the entire team gathered around him. He was taken off the field on a stretcher.
The 31-year-old player posted a message on Instagram expressing his gratitude for the prayers and support.
His message said: “This was an unfortunate experience, but when you give so much to the game and do everything possible to improve for yourself and for the success of the teams, you can feel that there is a lot at stake. When you stop, it may seem that everything around you also stops.”
He also referenced his faith and said that “on the bright side”, he will be able to spend more time with his family.
The Commanders had depth on the defensive line. However, Wise provided necessary muscle and was considered an important leader.
The team also features Dorance Armstrong and Javontae Jean-Baptiste, as well as Von Miller, whom they primarily signed to pressure the passer. Jalyn Holmes is on the practice squad. In August, they released veteran Clelin Ferrell.
Wise played his first eight seasons in New England.
