Verstappen Mocks McLaren’s Strategy at the Italian Grand Prix

In the final laps of the Italian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen, the undisputed leader, couldn’t help but laugh as he observed the order of the orange cars following him. The situation at McLaren, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri exchanging positions due to team orders, was a source of mockery for the Red Bull driver. McLaren’s strategy, in an attempt to capitalize on a Safety Car period, led to an unusual situation. Piastri was the first to pit, with an impeccable 1.9-second stop. However, Norris’s stop was slower, losing valuable seconds and falling behind his teammate. Faced with this, McLaren intervened, asking Piastri to concede the position to Norris, in the name of “fairness”, a term widely used after the race.

“We said a slow pit stop was part of racing. I don’t really see what’s changed here. But if you want me to, I will,” Piastri commented.

Norris regained second position, reducing his championship lead. Verstappen, for his part, reacted with indifference, making it clear that it was not his problem. Verstappen’s attitude contrasts with that of McLaren, which has sought equity between its drivers. McLaren’s controversy is based on good intentions. CEO Zak Brown believes he has the best driver lineup in modern F1. Despite the tensions, the relationship between Norris and Piastri has been respectful, as demonstrated by Piastri yielding position.

Andrea Stella, McLaren team principal, emphasized the importance of justice and fairness. Piastri, for his part, stated that the decision was correct, as Norris had qualified ahead and led the race. However, this insistence on justice could put McLaren in a complicated situation in the championship. McLaren’s strategy has been put to the test on several occasions. In the past, Piastri won in Hungary after Norris yielded the position. These decisions have generated debate about who decides what is fair and what the criteria are. As the championship progresses, these decisions will become more important. Toto Wolff, Mercedes team principal, suggested that McLaren opened a Pandora’s box. Wolff pointed out that setting a precedent is difficult to undo. The situation raises questions about what is considered a team error and how one reacts to it. McLaren will review the last laps of Monza before the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. However, a change of approach is not expected.
