Moves on the Horizon: Possible MLB Changes for 2026

The 2025 Major League Baseball season is nearing its end, and with it, teams are beginning to plan for the 2026 campaign. In this context, several key positions, such as managers and general managers, are under scrutiny. Below, an analysis of the teams with potential for changes in their leadership.

Managers in the Spotlight

The situation of Brian Snitker, manager of the Atlanta Braves, is an example of the decisions that lie ahead. Snitker, who will turn 70 next month, could consider his retirement after a decade at the helm of the team. If so, there is speculation about a role in the front office, maintaining his connection with the organization since 1977, when he was signed as a player.

Atlanta Braves

If Snitker decides to leave the position, the Braves’ manager position would be highly sought after, despite the disappointing 2025 season. The team has young and established talent, such as Ronald Acuña Jr., Matt Olson, Chris Sale and rookie Hurston Waldrep, in addition to the franchise’s stability. Alex Anthopoulos, head of baseball operations, has a contract until 2031. Among the possible successors, Walt Weiss, current bench coach; David Ross, former Cubs manager, and Mark DeRosa, MLB Network analyst, both with a past in the organization; and Skip Schumaker, the National League Manager of the Year in 2022, currently in the Rangers’ office, are mentioned.

Texas Rangers

Bruce Bochy, current manager, could be in his final years. Chris Young, Rangers’ head of baseball operations, was expected to prepare a succession for when Bochy retired. However, there are no conversations about Bochy’s intentions for 2026. Like Snitker, Bochy will turn 70 at the end of the year. His possible retirement would lead him to the Hall of Fame. His teams have won four championships under his direction, and he ranks sixth all-time in wins.

Minnesota Twins

Rocco Baldelli, the current manager, had his option for 2026 renewed in June. However, the Twins could seek a change after a complicated 2025 season. If the Twins decide to change managers, Derek Shelton, former Twins coach, could be considered, along with James Rowson, former Twins batting coach and now with the Yankees, among others.

Los Angeles Angels

Ron Washington, current manager, is on medical leave after undergoing surgery. The owner, Arte Moreno, will decide on his return. Ray Montgomery has been in charge of the team in the interim. Moreno could look for a more renowned name if he decides not to count on Washington. Mike Scioscia, former Angels manager, could be an option.

Arizona Diamondbacks

Torey Lovullo, current manager, could face changes, despite the team’s injuries. However, Lovullo’s relationship with the head of baseball operations, Mike Hazen, is very solid, which could influence the decision.

Philadelphia Phillies

Rob Thomson, current manager, is under contract until 2026. The owner, John Middleton, could seek changes if the team doesn’t achieve its goals. David Dombrowski, president of baseball operations, could consider Brad Ausmus, Yankees bench coach.

San Francisco Giants

Bob Melvin, current manager, works with Buster Posey, head of baseball operations. The team could consider changes, but their recent improvement could postpone that possibility. Melvin’s contract ends in 2026.

Baltimore Orioles

Tony Mansolino is the interim manager, following the dismissal of Brandon Hyde. The team’s performance under his direction has been positive, but the final decision will rest with the general manager, Mike Elias. Cal Ripken Jr. is not interested in the position.

St. Louis Cardinals

Oliver Marmol, current manager, has one year remaining on his contract. Chaim Bloom is about to take over in the front office. Bloom is expected to work with Marmol before making a decision for 2027 and beyond.

Executives at the Main Office

Changes in general management also influence the future of the teams.

Washington Nationals

Mike DeBartolo is the interim general manager, following the dismissal of Mike Rizzo. Ownership is interviewing candidates to replace Rizzo, including Matt Forman, Carter Hawkins, and Amiel Sawdaye. The final decision will be made by a group of the ownership, led by Mark Lerner. The new head of baseball operations will lead the search for the next manager. Miguel Cairo is the interim manager.

Colorado Rockies

Bill Schmidt could be in his final season at the helm of baseball operations. The Rockies are expected to be more open to hiring external personnel. Thad Levine is a possibility.

Toronto Blue Jays

Mark Shapiro, president, is in his final year of his contract. An announcement about his extension is expected. The Jays have had a successful summer, with the extension of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the lead in the American League East Division.

Athletics

David Forst, general manager, has been a figure of stability, but his future is uncertain. The team moved to Las Vegas, and owner John Fisher has been criticized.

Seattle Mariners

Jerry Dipoto, head of baseball operations, has built a competitive team. It would be a surprise if there were changes in the Mariners’ hierarchy, even if they don’t make the playoffs.

Pittsburgh Pirates

Ben Cherington, general manager, is under scrutiny. Don Kelly, current manager, is well-regarded. Ownership could decide not to make changes.
