Wriddhiman Saha, R Ashwin, and Prithvi Shaw have been selected to represent India in the Adelaide Test. Umesh Yadav will complete the trio of fast bowlers. The main questions India faced before the Test were: whether to maintain confidence in Shaw, whether to play with a spinner and persist with Ashwin, and which of the wicketkeepers would be selected. On the eve of the day-night Test, the team resolved all doubts by announcing the starting eleven. Shaw had been under pressure, especially with Shubman Gill’s good performance in the two practice matches, which impressed figures like Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar. However, Shaw, as a starting opener, demonstrated in one of the four innings in New Zealand that he can be destructive. Although his scores were low in the practice matches, it was his loose shots that worried Gavaskar and Border.

Similarly, Ashwin, the starting spinner, kept his place, especially due to the absence of Ravindra Jadeja due to injury. The last time India chose not to include Ashwin in a series opener was on the 2014-15 Australia tour, a decision that was criticized. Regarding the wicketkeeper, India left out Pant, who had been preferred to Saha in Tests outside of Asia. The team seems to have decided that the pink ball requires a more established wicketkeeper. Yadav was the frontrunner to be India’s third fast bowler, replacing the injured Ishant Sharma. He has Test experience and also impressed in the only practice match he played.
