Luis García Leaves the Game Due to Elbow Pain

Houston Astros right-handed pitcher Luis García left Tuesday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays in the second inning due to right elbow discomfort. García, who was making his second start after more than two years of inactivity due to recovery from Tommy John surgery, threw 27 pitches, 14 of them for strikes. After throwing an 88 mph fastball to Ernie Clement with two outs in the second inning, García gestured towards his elbow and then signaled to the dugout. After a brief conversation on the mound, he was removed with the trainer.

Astros pitcher Luis Garcia made his second start after being out for more than two years while recovering from Tommy John surgery, left Tuesday’s game due to right elbow discomfort. The Astros manager, Joe Espada, expressed his regret. “It was a blow to the stomach,” Espada said. “He has worked very hard to come back. Seeing him pointing to his elbow is tough.” García had hit the previous batter, Addison Barger, in the foot with a curveball on the first pitch.

Astros infielder Carlos Correa said he was “devastated” to see García leave injured.

García earned a win against the Angels on September 1st, allowing three hits and three runs in six innings in his first start since May 1, 2023. Espada affirmed that Garcia had no problem recovering from that opening. “He’s been fine,” Espada said. “If there was any issue, he wouldn’t have pitched. Just unfortunate.” Against Toronto, right-hander García retired the batters in order in the first inning. The second batter, Nathan Lukes, was out when his line drive hit García’s glove and soared behind second base, where shortstop Jeremy Peña made a sliding catch. García’s fastest pitch came in the second inning, a 91 mph fastball to Alejandro Kirk, the only batter he struck out.
