Dabrowski and Routliffe win the US Open women’s doubles title
In an exciting final held at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe were crowned US Open champions in the women’s doubles category for the second time in three years. The duo, seeded as number three, defeated the number one pair, made up of Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova, with a score of 6-4, 6-4. This triumph marks a special milestone for Dabrowski, who celebrated her first major success after undergoing treatment for breast cancer. The tennis player even delayed part of her treatment to be able to compete at Wimbledon last year, where she and Routliffe reached the final. Townsend and Siniakova were looking to add the US Open title to their impressive record, after winning Wimbledon last year and the Australian Open in January. Townsend became one of the tournament’s prominent figures after an incident in a singles match. The African-American player recounted that her opponent, Jelena Ostapenko, told her she had no “class” or “education,” a comment that sparked debate about possible racial connotations.Despite this setback, Townsend advanced to the fourth round in singles, where she was defeated by Barbora Krejcikova. In doubles, alongside Siniakova, she reached the final of a Grand Slam for the fifth time, eliminating Venus Williams and Leylah Fernandez along the way. Dabrowski, 33, a Canadian national, and Routliffe, 30, from New Zealand, shared a prize of $1 million. The same amount received by the winners of the men’s final, Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos. That has been a stigma in our community of being “uneducated” and all things, when it is the furthest thing from the truth.
