Djokovic Acknowledges the Difficulty of Competing Against Alcaraz and Sinner

Following his defeat in the US Open semi-finals against Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic admitted that facing Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner in Grand Slam tournaments will be a challenge in the future. The Serbian tennis player, who is seeking his 25th Grand Slam title, has fallen to Sinner and Alcaraz in three major tournaments this season. Despite defeating Alcaraz at the Australian Open, he was forced to withdraw in the semifinals due to an injury. Since then, he has lost in the semifinals against Sinner at the French Open and Wimbledon, and now against Alcaraz at the US Open.

“It will be very difficult for me in the future to overcome the obstacle of Sinner and Alcaraz in the Grand Slams in the best-of-five sets. I think I have more opportunities in the best-of-three, but in the best-of-five it’s tough”

Since Djokovic won his last Grand Slam title at the 2023 US Open, Sinner and Alcaraz have won the last seven major titles. Both players seemed destined to meet in the US Open final.

Djokovic, although satisfied with his level of play, acknowledged the difference in his physical condition and stamina compared to his younger rivals.

“They are too good, you know, playing at a really high level. Unfortunately, I ran out of energy after the second set [against Alcaraz on Friday]. I think I had enough energy to fight him and keep up with him for two sets. After that, I was out of breath, and he kept going.”

Djokovic has previously hinted that the end of his career is approaching, but he has indicated that he plans to play next season. On Friday, he reiterated his desire to play a “full Grand Slam season next year.” He will consider changing his strategy for 2026, believing he could be more competitive in other tournaments. Djokovic, currently ranked number 7, will rise to number 4 in the ranking next week. He is currently in third place in the race to the season finals, but is not sure of his schedule for the rest of the season. He plans to participate in a 250-level tournament in Athens in early November, but otherwise has not committed to another ATP event. Djokovic said he would consult with his team about the next steps for 2025 and beyond. He added that he still enjoys playing and is grateful for the support of the fans.
