Jaime Munguia, Cleared of Sanctions After Drug Test
Former junior middleweight world champion Jaime Munguia has been cleared of any wrongdoing following an adverse finding in a doping test after his victory in May against Bruno Surace. The test, which initially yielded a positive result, was determined to be a “false positive”, caused by “accidental contamination with pregnenolone, a legal and non-prohibited substance”. As a result, Munguia will not face sanctions and his victory over Surace stands. Munguia, with a record of 45-2 and 35 knockouts, was notified about the presence of a prohibited substance by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA) weeks after his victory over Surace. The Mexican boxer declared his innocence through social media, promising to clear his name. Following the initial result, Munguia’s team requested the analysis of sample B, which also tested positive. However, after a thorough review, Munguia’s innocence was determined, and he expressed his desire to return to the ring before the end of the year.Munguia added: “I didn’t cheat, science proves it, and I am grateful to the WBC, BBBofC and UKAD for recognizing this truth. I am ready to leave this behind and move forward with my career. I hope to return to the ring soon and I am deeply grateful to everyone, especially my family, team, fans and sponsors, who supported me during this difficult situation.”I want to thank the WBC for reviewing all the scientific evidence and confirming that there will be no investigation, charge, or sanction. We have been notified by the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) that it designated UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) as the body responsible for anti-doping regulation, testing, investigation, and results management, and after its review of the entire record, they reached the same conclusion.
