Dream Debut: Jonah Tong Shines in Mets’ Historic Victory

In a night to remember, the New York Mets starred in a memorable game, sealing a resounding 19-9 victory over the Miami Marlins. The match was marked by the stellar debut of Jonah Tong, who dazzled on the mound.

Tong, in his first appearance in the Major Leagues, pitched five innings allowing only one earned run. The young Canadian pitcher, 22 years old, received a standing ovation from the 42,112 fans present in the stadium, after an impeccable first inning. His performance included six strikeouts without conceding walks, demonstrating impressive control with 63 of his 97 pitches in the strike zone.

The Mets’ offense backed Tong’s performance with a display of power, hitting six home runs and setting a new record for runs scored in a home game. The hitting party started early, with Juan Soto and Brandon Nimmo igniting the offensive spark in the first inning.

In the first inning, Juan Soto hit a two-run home run and Brandon Nimmo followed with a three-run homer before the first out was recorded.

Pete Alonso contributed a two-run homer in the second inning. Nimmo added another solo home run in the sixth, followed by a hit from Mark Vientos. Luis Torrens closed the account with a three-run homer in a six-run eighth inning.

Tong allowed four runs in the fifth inning, following defensive errors by Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso. Lindor dropped a throw from Brett Baty and Alonso misplayed a ground ball from Jakob Marsee.

After allowing López’s hit, Tong finished his outing by striking out Liam Hicks with a 95 mph fastball.

The Mets achieved their ninth victory in the last 13 games.
