Akie Iwai leads the CPKC Women’s Open after her recent victory

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario – Akie Iwai demonstrated her excellent form at the CPKC Women’s Open, solidifying her position at the top of the leaderboard on Thursday, just four days after her triumph at the Portland Classic. Iwai finished his afternoon round at the Mississaugua Golf and Country Club with birdies on holes eight and nine, both par-4s, carding an impressive 64 strokes, seven under par, and a two-stroke lead.

I won last week, but it’s already in the past, it’s already behind.

Sharing second place are fifteen-year-old Canadian amateur Aphrodite Deng, along with world number one Jeeno Thitikul, and other outstanding golfers such as Leona Maguire, Gaby Lopez, and the 2023 winner, Megan Khang. Last Sunday, Iwai joined her twin sister Chisato as a rookie winner on the LPGA Tour. The 23-year-old Japanese player had already earned second places in Thailand in February and in Los Angeles in April, and saw her sister triumph in Mayakoba in May, in Mexico. This is the first time Iwai has competed in Canada.

Really beautiful field. It looks like something similar to a field in Japan.

For his part, Chisato Iwai had a less fortunate performance, with bogeys on holes 8 and 9, finishing with 75 strokes. Aphrodite Deng, born in Calgary, Alberta, and who lived in Montreal before her family moved to New Jersey, currently resides in Orlando, Florida, but remains a Canadian citizen and participates in Golf Canada’s junior program.

I just try to hit every shot and play in the fairway.

Thitikul played her first round since reaching the top spot in the world ranking.

I think it’s another day of work for me.

Nelly Korda started with 69 strokes. Canadian star Brooke Henderson, who is going through a less favorable moment, achieved four birdies and four bogeys, finishing with 71 strokes. Henderson, champion in 2018, obtained her last title on the LPGA Tour in January 2023.

Grateful to have made it back to par.

Henderson played alongside Thitikul and Lottie Woad, winner of the Women’s Scottish Open, who finished with 75 strokes. Defending champion Lauren Coughlin completed the round with 74 strokes. Coughlin won last year in Calgary.
