José Sirí begins rehabilitation in the minor leagues
Dominican outfielder José Sirí, belonging to the New York Mets, is about to take a significant step in his recovery. It is expected that next week he will begin his rehabilitation assignment in the minor leagues, marking the end of a recovery stage after suffering a fracture in his left tibia.
This news opens the possibility that Sirí, who has been out of action for more than four months, can contribute to the team in September. The Mets are looking to strengthen their squad for the final stretch of the season.
Sirí, 30, arrived at the New York team hoping to take on a key role in center field. However, a fracture suffered on April 12 delayed his debut with the franchise. Although his return was anticipated for June, the recovery took longer than expected. Currently, the player is progressively engaging in baseball activities.
The return of Sirí could influence the dynamics of the Mets’ outfield, currently occupied by Cedric Mullins and Tyrone Taylor. Mullins remains the primary option against right-handed pitchers, while Taylor has struggled against lefties, with an OPS of .195 since July 21. The arrival of Sirí, a right-handed hitter and solid defender, could lead the team to make decisions about the future of Taylor, whose contract ends at the end of the season.
In 2024, Sirí demonstrated his potential with 18 home runs and 14 stolen bases with the Rays, which supports the expectations about his contribution to the team. The Mets value the option of having the Dominican player, which could bring greater depth to their lineup in the decisive stage of the calendar.
