NASCAR Will Not Implement Restrictions on Celebrations After Connor Zilisch Accident

Following Connor Zilisch’s mishap in Victory Lane, NASCAR has confirmed that it has no plans to limit driver celebrations. Zilisch, an Xfinity series driver, suffered a fall that resulted in a broken collarbone.

Mike Forde, NASCAR’s managing director of communications, addressed the incident on the “Hauler Talk” podcast, where he explained that certain precautions will be implemented in Victory Lane, but no new policies will be established. Zilisch had secured his sixth victory of the season at Watkins Glen International when, while celebrating, he climbed onto the roof of his No. 88 Chevrolet. Apparently, his left foot got caught in the driver’s side window net, which caused him to fall. The 19-year-old driver was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with a broken collarbone.

Forde assured that NASCAR will not prohibit drivers from climbing on the doors in Victory Lane. Although new policies will not be implemented, NASCAR will take precautions to avoid similar situations in the future. Forde mentioned that the window net waving on the outside may have contributed to the accident. Therefore, checks will be carried out to ensure that the net is inside the car, thus minimizing the risks of slippage.

Zilisch underwent surgery on Tuesday and it is not yet known if he will recover in time for the next Xfinity Series race at Daytona International Speedway on August 22. The driver has already missed a race this season due to a back injury sustained in an accident at Talladega Superspeedway, for which he received a waiver. Forde did not confirm whether Zilisch will receive a waiver for the playoffs in case he misses the Daytona race.
