NASCAR Will Not Implement Restrictions on Celebrations, Following Connor Zilisch Accident

NASCAR has confirmed that it will not implement new policies that limit driver celebrations, despite the recent incident involving Connor Zilisch, Xfinity series racer. The incident occurred after Zilisch suffered a fall in Victory Lane, resulting in a broken collarbone. Mike Forde, NASCAR’s communications director, addressed the issue on the “Hauler Talk” podcast, where he mentioned that certain precautions will be taken in Victory Lane, but that no new policies will be established. Zilisch, after achieving his sixth victory of the season at Watkins Glen International, climbed onto the roof of his No. 88 Chevrolet to celebrate. Unfortunately, he slipped and fell onto the asphalt. The 19-year-old driver was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with a fractured clavicle.

Very grateful to be out of that, and I guess I didn’t walk out, but I’m very grateful to be walking today and to be okay.

Forde indicated that NASCAR will not prohibit drivers from climbing on the door in Victory Lane. However, NASCAR will take new precautions to avoid situations similar to the one that caused Zilisch’s fall. Forde explained that the problem may have been the window net waving on the outside of the vehicle. As a preventive measure, a check could be carried out to ensure that the net is inside the car, thus reducing the risk of slippage.

Zilisch underwent surgery on Tuesday, and it’s still unclear if he will recover in time for the next Xfinity series race at Daytona International Speedway on August 22. Zilisch has already missed a race this season due to a back injury sustained in an accident at Talladega Superspeedway, for which he received a waiver. Forde did not specify whether Zilisch would receive a waiver for the playoffs in case he missed the race at Daytona.
