Shane Steichen Nears Decision on Colts’ Quarterback Future

Colts coach Shane Steichen strongly hinted after the preseason loss against the Packers that a decision on the quarterback position is coming. The competition between Anthony Richardson Sr. and Daniel Jones has been intense during the last weeks of training.

“I’ve obviously seen three weeks of this, so I’d like to make a decision soon,” Steichen said, referring to the last three weeks of training camp.

Since training began in April, Richardson and Jones have been in an open competition. Steichen claimed to be very close to making a decision, assuring that he will do what he considers best for the team. Jones started Saturday’s game, showing efficiency after a slow start. Richardson had his first extensive action of the preseason, following a pinky injury to his throwing hand in the previous game against the Ravens. Richardson showed progress, leading an effective offensive series in his first possession. He completed five of his first six passes for 64 yards. However, he struggled in the following possessions due to offensive errors, poor protection, and penalties. He finished the game with 6 of 11 passes for 73 yards.
Colts quarterback Daniel Jones started slow on his first drive but finished 7-of-11 for 101 yards Saturday against the Packers.
Richardson, the fourth overall pick in 2023, has been under scrutiny following a brief stint and two injuries that kept him out for four games. The Colts, concerned about his durability and inconsistency, signed Jones to a one-year, $14 million contract in March. Coaches and teammates have praised Richardson’s progress, highlighting his improvement in the quick passing game. Richardson himself has emphasized the importance of routine plays for his development. Steichen also considers Jones’ strengths, mentioning operation, communication within the group, adjustments, and consistency as key factors that could give the seven-year veteran an advantage. Jones completed 7 of 11 passes for 101 yards, and emphasized his focus on improving and making consistent decisions. Steichen, in his third season, acknowledges that this will be one of his most important decisions as head coach.
