McIlroy, currently number 2 in the world, is already qualified for the European team that will compete in next month’s Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, New York. Regarding the American team, captain Keegan Bradley, who is tenth in the rankings, could self-select if he fails to finish in the top six in this week’s tournament. McIlroy considers Bradley to be one of the best 12 American players.

I definitely think he’s one of the best 12 American players right now. That’s why everyone is so interested and it’s such a compelling case.

The last time a captain played in the Ryder Cup was in 1963, when Arnold Palmer led the American team to a resounding victory. Bradley hasn’t decided yet if he will be included in the team as a player. He expressed that it depends on his performance in the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship. McIlroy emphasized the difficulty of being a player-captain due to off-field demands, such as media responsibilities and meetings with the vice-captains. According to McIlroy, the captain’s role has grown significantly in recent years. The golfer suggested that a playing captain could be limited to playing only one session on each of the first two days, which could affect the team’s strategy. Ryder Cup veterans like Rickie Fowler and Patrick Cantlay support Bradley’s inclusion in the team, recognizing his quality as a player. The current world number 1, Scottie Scheffler, also supports the possibility of Bradley being part of the American team, highlighting his potential contribution.
