Monica Seles Reveals Battle with Myasthenia Gravis
The former professional tennis player, Mónica Seles, winner of nine Grand Slam titles, has publicly shared her struggle with myasthenia gravis, a neuromuscular disease that has been affecting her health for the last three years. At 51 years old, the tennis player of Yugoslav origin, but naturalized American, decided to make her condition public, seeking to raise awareness about this disease, just before the start of the US Open.A condition without a cure
Seles, who reached the top of the world tennis, faced an additional challenge in her career. In 1993, while participating in a match in Hamburg, she suffered a knife attack that kept her away from the courts for two years. After this incident, she managed to win an additional Grand Slam. The tennis legend retired in 2003, leaving a legacy of 53 titles and 178 weeks as number one in the world.“I was playing tennis with some children or with some family members and I missed a ball. It was like I was seeing two balls. They were symptoms that I couldn’t ignore. It took me time to absorb them and be able to talk openly about it, because it’s something very difficult. It affects me a lot on a day-to-day basis,” said Seles.
