Monica Seles Reveals Battle Against Autoimmune Disease
Tennis legend Monica Seles publicly shared her battle with myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune neuromuscular disease that affects muscle strength. Seles, winner of nine Grand Slam titles, revealed that the diagnosis came three years ago. The symptoms began to manifest while playing tennis, including double vision and weakness in arms and legs. The 51-year-old tennis player, who played her last match in 2003, decided to speak openly to raise awareness about myasthenia gravis, known as MG. The disease, which can affect people of all ages, causes weakness in voluntary muscles. They admitted that they were surprised to receive the diagnosis and that they are now living a “new normal.” Their situation was compared to the “adjustments” they had to make throughout their life, including their arrival in the United States from Yugoslavia at age 13, their success in tennis, and the attack they suffered.“I was playing with some kids or family, and I missed a ball. I saw two balls. These are obviously symptoms you can’t ignore,” Seles commented.
