Grigor Dimitrov Withdraws from US Open Due to Injury
Bulgarian tennis player Grigor Dimitrov, a semifinalist in three Grand Slam tournaments, has confirmed his withdrawal from the US Open. The news comes after suffering a chest muscle injury, which forced him to abandon his match against Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon just over a month ago.
Dimitrov, 34 years old, was forced to withdraw from the Wimbledon tournament on July 7th, after having won the first two sets. This situation marked his fifth consecutive Grand Slam without being able to finish a match, a pattern that has been repeating since the Australian Open in January and Roland Garros in May.
In last year’s US Open edition, Dimitrov retired in the quarterfinals, when he was losing 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 4-1 against Frances Tiafoe.
Dimitrov reached the US Open semi-finals in 2019, the Australian Open in 2017 and Wimbledon in 2014. His highest ranking was number 3, he is currently in 21st place.
With Dimitrov’s withdrawal, Alejandro Tabilo enters the men’s main draw, which will begin on August 24. Brandon Holt is next on the list to enter the tournament if another player withdraws. Holt achieved a surprising victory over Taylor Fritz at Flushing Meadows in 2022 and is the son of two-time US Open champion Tracy Austin.
