Joe Mazzulla Secures His Future with the Celtics: Signs Multi-Year Extension

Celtics president Brad Stevens has reiterated during the offseason the team’s desire to have Joe Mazzulla as coach for the long term. This Friday, that intention materialized with the signing of a multi-year contract extension. The details and duration of the new agreement were not revealed. “I feel blessed,” Mazzulla stated in a statement. “I wouldn’t be here without my faith, my wife, and my children. We appreciate the collaboration with our ownership groups, the mentorship of Brad, and the support of our team. Most importantly, I am grateful for the players I have been able to coach in the last three seasons. I am eager to compete for the Celtics and the city of Boston.” Mazzulla, 37, completes his third season as Boston’s coach, leading the team to the playoffs in each of them, including the NBA championship in the 2023-24 season, the franchise’s 18th title. He became the youngest head coach to win the NBA Finals since the 1968-69 season. Under Mazzulla’s direction, the Celtics have achieved at least 57 wins each season, surpassing 60 wins in the last two. Stevens, for his part, highlighted Mazzulla’s dedication.

“He understands the work and has a passion for the Celtics that is only comparable to that of our most ardent fans,” Stevens said. “He has worked hard and achieved incredible things in his first three years as head coach, including an average of more than 60 wins per season and winning the 2024 NBA Championship. Joe is a talented leader who brings a constant commitment to learning, improvement, and maximizing every day we compete for the Boston Celtics.”

Mazzulla joined the Celtics in 2019, serving as an assistant for three seasons before being named interim head coach following Ime Udoka’s suspension before the start of the 2022-23 season.
