Joe Mazzulla Secures His Future with the Celtics with a Multi-Year Extension

Celtics president Brad Stevens has reiterated during the offseason the team’s desire to have Joe Mazzulla as coach for the long term. That intention has materialized, as the Celtics have announced a multi-year contract extension for Mazzulla. The specific details and duration of the new agreement were not disclosed. In a statement, Mazzulla expressed his gratitude for this opportunity.

“I wouldn’t be here without my faith, my wife, and my children,” Mazzulla said. “We are grateful for the partnership with our ownership groups, the mentorship of Brad, and the support of our staff. Most importantly, I am grateful for the players I have been able to coach over the last three seasons. I look forward to competing for the Celtics and the city of Boston.”

Joe Mazzulla
Mazzulla, 37 years old, completed his third season as Boston’s coach, guiding the team to the playoffs in each of them, including winning the NBA championship in the 2023-24 season, the franchise’s 18th title. He became the youngest head coach to win the NBA Finals since the 1968-69 season. Under Mazzulla’s direction, the Celtics have achieved at least 57 wins each season and surpassed 60 wins in the last two. Stevens highlighted Mazzulla’s dedication and passion for the Celtics.

“He understands the work and has a passion for the Celtics that is only comparable to that of our most fervent fans,” Stevens said. “He has worked hard and achieved incredible things in his first three years as head coach, including an average of more than 60 wins per season and winning the 2024 NBA Championship. Joe is a talented leader who brings a constant commitment to learning, improvement, and maximizing every day we have to compete for the Boston Celtics.”

Mazzulla joined the Celtics in 2019 and spent three seasons as an assistant before being named interim head coach following the suspension of Ime Udoka before the start of the 2022-23 season.
