Joe Mazzulla Secures His Future with the Celtics: Signs Multi-Year Extension
Boston Celtics president Brad Stevens reiterated during the offseason the team’s desire to have Joe Mazzulla as coach for the long term. That intention materialized on Friday with the announcement of a multi-year contract extension for Mazzulla. The specific details and length of the new agreement were not revealed.Mazzulla, 37 years old, completed his third season as Celtics coach, guiding the team to the playoffs in each of them. The most recent achievement was winning the NBA championship in the 2023-24 season, the 18th title in the franchise’s history. With this victory, Mazzulla became the youngest head coach to win the NBA Finals since the 1968-69 season, when Bill Russell, 35, led the Celtics to the championship as a player-coach. Under Mazzulla’s direction, the Celtics have achieved at least 57 wins each season and surpassed 60 wins in the last two.“This is a blessing. I wouldn’t be here without my faith, my wife, and my children. We appreciate the collaboration with our ownership groups, the mentorship of Brad, and the support of our staff. Most importantly, I am grateful for the players I have been able to coach over the last three seasons. I look forward to competing for the Celtics and the city of Boston”.

Although Stevens has not publicly disclosed the details of Mazzulla’s contract, the coach received an initial extension shortly after his interim tag was removed in February 2023. Stevens confirmed in June that Mazzulla had received at least one additional extension before the most recent one.
Mazzulla originally joined the Celtics in 2019 and spent the next three years as an assistant before taking over as interim head coach after Ime Udoka was suspended by the team before the start of the 2022-23 season.“He understands the work and feels a passion for the Celtics that only rivals that of our most ardent fans. He has worked hard and achieved incredible things in his first three years as head coach, including an average of over 60 wins per season and winning the 2024 NBA Championship. Joe is a talented leader who brings a constant commitment to learning, improvement, and maximizing every day we compete for the Boston Celtics”.
