Sophie Cunningham Receives New WNBA Fine for Criticism of Referees

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has been fined for the second time by the WNBA due to negative comments about the league’s referees. Cunningham, during his podcast “Show Me Something” earlier this week, revealed that the WNBA fined him $1,500 for statements made the previous week.

If I were a referee, I know I would make mistakes all the time. I’m not saying their job is easy, but when it’s a simple call in front of you several times, what are you doing? What are you doing?

The player commented on the premiere episode of her podcast, on July 28, that the referees are “very inconsistent”. Cunningham explained that she learned about the second fine when the Fever’s general manager, Amber Cox, informed her about the league’s contact. In the July 28th episode, she added: “I think players across the league, and new fans across the country, are wondering: ‘What’s going on with the referees?’ And I answer: ‘I don’t know'”, before minimizing the impact of the “$500” fines. Cunningham had already been fined the same amount for a TikTok video posted on July 18.
