In the Hungarian Grand Prix, McLaren’s bold strategy and the skill of their drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, starred in an exciting duel that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

A Strategic Battle on the Track

The race, which culminated in Norris securing the victory, was marked by a pit stop strategy that divided the teammates. Norris, with a one-stop strategy, managed to overtake Piastri, who opted for two stops.

If you didn’t notice, that was a good race.

Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing
The decision to split the strategies was made in part due to the position of Charles Leclerc, from Ferrari, who started from pole position. McLaren initially favored a two-stop strategy, but Norris’s audacity and his team allowed them to capitalize on the situation. The one-stop strategy gave Norris the advantage of clean air, allowing him to exploit the full potential of his car. Piastri, on the other hand, was hampered by traffic, especially behind Leclerc. Piastri himself acknowledged the difficulty of competing in such a situation, but also praised the excitement of the race. It was entertaining from the inside as well, a pretty fun race, considering everything, but obviously, when you’re on the losing side of that battle, it’s a bit difficult. Norris, for his part, admitted that he did not expect the one-stop strategy to work, but confidence grew with each lap.

I didn’t think it was going to work for most of that second stint. But with every lap, I gained more confidence that I was going to be closer. So yeah, it’s definitely rewarding.

The battle between the McLaren drivers intensified in the final laps, with Piastri attempting a risky overtake that almost ended in contact. Despite the tension, the McLaren team was proud of the way their drivers competed. The team principal, Andrea Stella, highlighted the importance of allowing the drivers to compete and expressed confidence that this philosophy will be maintained for the rest of the season. The final result was a victory for Norris, but the race demonstrated the skill and courage of both McLaren drivers, as well as the importance of strategy in Formula 1.
