Protest Against the Glazers and Ratcliffe at Manchester United
The Manchester United fan group “The 1958” has announced a new protest against the Glazer family and, for the first time, against Sir Jim Ratcliffe, before the start of the Premier League against Arsenal. The group, known for organizing numerous demonstrations in recent years demanding a change of ownership, will march towards Old Trafford on August 17th. Ratcliffe, who owns 28.94% of United’s shares, has overseen significant changes, some of them unpopular, since taking over daily operational control from the Glazers in February 2024.The spokesperson for “The 1958” added that they will not allow natural optimism and new additions to divert attention from the overall picture off the field. It’s a new season, but the same ownership problems. Twenty years of the Glazers and their mountain of debt is too long. Enough is enough.

Jim Ratcliffe chose to lie down with the Glazers and, in our opinion, is helping to keep them in charge.

The spokesperson for “The 1958” also indicated that the protest is for “all the fans who have been silenced, evicted, excluded and despised”, adding that “this is about the future of football”.This is no longer just about property; it’s about survival: the survival of our identity, our community, and our values.

Ratcliffe suggested in March that he would walk away from United if he suffered the level of abuse directed at the Glazer family.Jim Ratcliffe, you have chosen your side and it is not ours. Now you are shoulder to shoulder with the Glazers. The mask has fallen. You are not a savior. You are like a [red] devil in disguise.

Ratcliffe added that he could put up with it for a while, but that eventually, if the abuse reached the magnitude of the Glazer family, he would have to let someone else take over. United finished last season in 15th place in the Premier League, their lowest position since 1974, and failed to qualify for Europe after losing the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur. It can be unpleasant. And I’ve probably failed on the fun front.
