The excitement of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs ignites next week with the FedEx St. Jude Championship. However, a prominent figure, the world’s number 2, Rory McIlroy, will not participate in this event. The reigning Masters champion is not on the list of participants for the St. Jude, as announced by the PGA Tour on Friday. The top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings, following the conclusion of this week’s Wyndham Championship, will earn a spot in the tournament. McIlroy’s absence reduces the field in Memphis, Tennessee, to 69 competitors. Last year, McIlroy finished in second-to-last place at the St. Jude, a tournament he has yet to win. He had already anticipated that he would not compete in this year’s edition.

“I practically finished last there this year, and I only dropped one place in the playoff standings,” McIlroy commented.

McIlroy is second in the FedEx Cup standings, just behind Scottie Scheffler, which secures him a place among the top 50 who will qualify for the BMW Championship the following week. The playoffs will culminate with the Tour Championship, where the top 30 in the FedEx standings will compete. McIlroy’s last appearance was at the Open Championship, where he tied for seventh place two weeks ago.
