Concern in Colorado: Seth Halvorsen Injured

The Colorado Rockies’ victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday was marred by an elbow injury to their closer, Seth Halvorsen. The right-handed pitcher, known for his powerful arm, had to leave the game after throwing only five pitches in the ninth inning. The first news is not encouraging.

“It doesn’t look good,” commented interim manager Warren Schaeffer. “I will inform them (on Sunday).”

Halvorsen, who leads the Rockies with 11 saves, was facing Pirates pinch-hitter Spencer Horwitz at the start of the ninth inning, with Colorado up 8-4 on the scoreboard. The pitcher was 0-2 in the count before throwing three consecutive balls, the last at 99 mph. Immediately after that pitch, Halvorsen bent over and grabbed his right arm, forcing the Rockies’ head athletic trainer, Keith Duggar, to run to the mound to check on him. After a brief conversation, Halvorsen left the game, being replaced by Dugan Darnell, who finished the 8-5 victory. Schaeffer indicated that Halvorsen had not reported any problems before Saturday’s game. Halvorsen has been Colorado’s primary closer since the beginning of June and had converted nine of his last 10 opportunities, including his last six attempts. Three of those saves came after the All-Star break, which has helped the Rockies post a 7-6 record. Colorado, which has a 30-80 record, is trying to avoid setting a modern-era losing record, currently held by the 2024 Chicago White Sox, who finished 41-121.
