Jacksonville, Fla. – Louis Rees-Zammit, the Welsh athlete who ventured into American football, has decided to return to rugby. Rees-Zammit announced via his social media on Thursday night that he is leaving the Jacksonville Jaguars of the NFL to return to the sport that made him famous: rugby, where he shone with Wales and participated with the British & Irish Lions.

“It’s been a great experience, but it’s time to go home. I’ve decided that this is the best time to make this decision and give myself time to prepare for next season.”

“I only have one thing on my mind, which is to return to rugby and do what I do best. I can’t explain how excited I am!”

Although he didn’t offer more details, Rees-Zammit promised more news soon. The 24-year-old player signed with the Kansas City Chiefs at the end of March 2024 as part of the International Player Pathway program, designed to give opportunities to athletes from all over the world in the NFL. The Chiefs used Rees-Zammit, who ran the 40 yards in 4.43 seconds on a testing day at the University of South Florida, as a running back. He played in all three preseason games, with six carries for 22 yards. The Chiefs released him on August 27th during the final roster cuts, and the Jaguars signed him the next day. They moved him to receiver and he practiced with the Jaguars’ practice squad during the 2024 season, but he was never promoted to the active roster. In February, the Jaguars included him in their 90-player roster. Jacksonville’s training camp began on July 23, but Rees-Zammit suffered a lower back injury in the team’s second practice and was limited in the following five.
