Lewis Hamilton, visibly affected, offered apologies to Ferrari after a complicated weekend at the Belgian Grand Prix, acknowledging that the performance was not what the team expected. The British driver’s qualifying for the main race and the sprint was disappointing, being eliminated in Q1. Despite not scoring points in the sprint race, Hamilton staged a remarkable comeback on Sunday, advancing to seventh position.

I’m sorry about this weekend, guys, for losing points

Hamilton had expressed his commitment to push the team, mentioning his desire to avoid the fate of other champion drivers who did not achieve titles with Ferrari. Ferrari hasn’t won the drivers’ championship since 2007, nor the constructors’ since 2008. His teammate, Charles Leclerc, achieved a podium finish, a positive result for the team that was presenting upgrades to its single-seater car. The team hoped the upgrades would reduce the gap to McLaren. Hamilton acknowledged the hard work of the entire team and the importance of the improvements, regretting his performance in the last two days.

I think everyone on the team worked really hard. Obviously we had these upgrades. Everyone in the factory worked really hard. And then when you come and have a performance like I had in these last two days, it’s difficult because that’s not what the team deserves.

Despite the setbacks, Hamilton managed to score points and highlighted Leclerc’s good performance. Formula 1 will continue with the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, before the summer break in August.
