Verstappen Criticizes Caution at the Belgian Grand Prix

Max Verstappen expressed his disappointment at the decision to delay the start of the Belgian Grand Prix due to heavy rain, calling it overly cautious. The race, originally scheduled to start at 3 p.m., was affected by adverse weather conditions at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. Although the rain momentarily subsided, the limited visibility due to the spray generated during the formation lap led the organizers to postpone the start. Lando Norris, who started from the pole position, reported the difficult conditions via the team radio, highlighting the poor visibility behind the safety car. The race finally started under safety car conditions for four laps, before a rolling start on lap 5, where Oscar Piastri overtook Norris.

We made a choice with the setup and we were only allowed to drive in almost dry conditions, so yes, it was a bit disappointing.

Verstappen, after finishing in fourth position, commented that the decision was “the other extreme” compared to the race at Silverstone, where conditions were also adverse. The Dutch driver lamented that the choice of his car’s configuration, based on the expectation of a wet race, was inappropriate due to the lack of action in those conditions. The driver considered that the race should have started at its original time, as the teams prepared for a race in rainy conditions.

George Russell, for his part, although he enjoyed driving in the rain, highlighted the challenges of the lack of visibility, especially at high speeds.

When you’re going over 200 miles an hour coming out of Eau Rouge, you literally can’t see anything, it’s like wearing a blindfold. It’s not racing, it’s stupid.
