Chase Elliott Claims Pole at Dover in the Rain
DOVER, Del. – Chase Elliott took advantage of the intense rain at Dover Motor Speedway to secure the pole position for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race.
Due to the rain that lashed the concrete one-mile track, Elliott and the rest of the competitors were unable to conduct any practice or qualifying laps on Saturday.
This race in Dover is scheduled to be the first in July since 1969, when the first one was held.
Elliott has two wins and ten top-five finishes in his fourteen races at Dover.
Chase Briscoe is in second place, followed by Christopher Bell, Tyler Reddick, and William Byron.
Shane van Gisbergen, last week’s winner at Sonoma Raceway, Michael McDowell, Joey Logano, Ty Gibbs, and Kyle Busch round out the top 10.
Logano is about to become the youngest driver in NASCAR history to reach 600 races.
Logano will be 35 years, 1 month and 26 days old when he reaches 600 races on Sunday at Dover Motor Speedway, surpassing Richard Petty, seven-time NASCAR champion and Hall of Famer, by six months.
The mid-season tournament, which awards a $1 million prize to the winner, pits Ty Dillon against John Hunter Nemechek and Reddick against Gibbs in the head-to-head challenge at Dover.
The winners will face each other next week in Indianapolis. Reddick is the favorite to win, according to Sportsbook.
The four drivers have not yet won this season.
