J.C. Tretter Resigns from His Position at the NFLPA
J.C. Tretter has resigned as the NFLPA’s strategy director and has withdrawn from consideration for the position of interim executive director of the same organization.Tretter, 34, held the position since October 2024. Previously, he was player president from 2020 to 2024. Following Lloyd Howell’s resignation on Thursday night, there was speculation that Tretter could be the interim CEO. The news of his possible candidacy generated public criticism on social media from several former NFL players.Tretter was president of the NFLPA players in 2023, when Howell was elected executive director of the union. He led a vote that modified the NFLPA constitution to make the search and election process more confidential. In addition, he led the 16-month search process that resulted in the election of Howell, whose leadership was questioned in recent weeks. In 2022, the NFLPA sued the owners alleging collusion to avoid guaranteed contracts. In 2023, the NFL sued the union for comments by Tretter suggesting that running backs who were not happy with their contracts could fake injuries, a violation of the collective bargaining agreement. Both complaints were resolved this year, but the decisions were not shared publicly by either the NFL or the NFLPA. It was reported that the NFLPA and the NFL had a confidentiality agreement for the collusion complaint that concealed information within the 61-page decision. In an interview with CBS Sports, Tretter denied having access to the collusion complaint or being involved in the agreement reached by the NFLPA with the NFL to keep those findings confidential to a select group of executives. A source with knowledge of the situation reported that the NFLPA player representatives’ board will meet on Sunday night to discuss candidates for interim director. Among the candidates to be discussed are Don Davis, NFLPA player director, Zamir Cobb, executive director of the NFLPA trust, and Ned Ehrlich, associate general counsel of the NFLPA. The board of representatives will also discuss the selection process for the next CEO, deciding whether the executive committee will lead that process or the interim director. In recent days, it has become very, very difficult for my family. And that’s something I can’t deal with. I have no interest in being [CEO]. Nor do I have any interest in being considered; I have made this known to the executive committee. I will also leave the NFLPA in the coming days because I have nothing more to give to the organization.
