Suspicious Bets in NBA Game: Terry Rozier Under Scrutiny
A professional gambler placed a series of bets in a short period of time, all related to NBA player Terry Rozier, generating a federal investigation. Documents obtained reveal details about suspicious bets in a 2023 NBA game, where a bettor placed 30 bets in just 46 minutes. These bets involved Terry Rozier’s statistics. On the morning of March 23, 2023, at a betting house in Biloxi, Mississippi, bets were placed for a total of $13,759 on the “under” in Rozier’s statistics. The player, who at that time played for the Charlotte Hornets, retired 10 minutes into the game due to a foot injury. All bets were winning. At least six sportsbooks in different states detected suspicious activity in the bets related to Rozier that day, focusing primarily on Louisiana and Mississippi. The NBA investigated the situation in 2023, determining that league rules were not violated. However, Rozier is one of three NBA players under investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York. The Biloxi bettor placed the bets at Harrah’s Gulf Coast, betting the “under” on Rozier’s points, rebounds, and assists. The largest bet, for $2,700, was placed at the counter. The other 29 bets were made through a betting kiosk, starting before the counter opened. Harrah’s Gulf Coast initially refused to pay the winning tickets, citing a rule about “manipulation” and suspicions of “insider information.” The casino requested permission from the Mississippi Gaming Commission to void the bets. Finally, Caesars settled the bets, resulting in a net profit of $13,017.70 for the bettor. Rozier, who was not listed on the pre-game injury report, finished the game with 5 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists, below the established betting lines. He did not play for the rest of the season and was traded to the Miami Heat in January 2024. Sources indicate that betting houses in New Orleans also received an unusually high volume of bets on the “under” in Rozier’s statistics. At 2:24 p.m. on the day of the match, U.S. Integrity issued an alert about “Suspicious bets on Terry Rozier’s NBA player props.” Most major sportsbooks halted bets on Rozier props within an hour of the U.S. Integrity alert. NBA rules prohibit players from betting on the league or sharing non-public information related to betting. Rozier’s lawyer, Jim Trusty, stated that his client is not the target of the federal investigation. A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York neither confirmed nor denied Rozier’s status in the investigation. Trusty added that Rozier met with NBA and FBI officials in 2023 and that the initial investigation determined that he had not acted improperly.Has Caesars been able to present any evidence to support that this is insider information?

Rozier is involved in the same federal investigation that led to the ban of Jontay Porter, former Toronto Raptors player, from the NBA. Porter pleaded guilty to conspiracy and admitted to withdrawing from two games to help bettors win bets on his props. Some of the same betting accounts that bet on Porter also bet on Rozier’s props in the Hornets-Pelicans game, in addition to several college basketball games that were flagged for suspicious betting activity. Trusty assured that Rozier has no connection with the people involved in the Porter case. In June, it was reported that Malik Beasley is also under federal investigation. It’s unfortunate that he’s a big name in the sport and has to endure all this.
