Mourinho expresses his desire to return to Portugal

José Mourinho has expressed his intention to return to Portugal to manage a team, while he is at the peak of his career. The 62-year-old coach has one more year on his contract with Fenerbahce.

“I will definitely return to Portugal. It hasn’t happened yet, but it will happen. Not because I feel like I’m approaching the end, I feel far from that. I don’t want to come to Portugal for a golden retirement or for the last years of my career. I want to come to Portugal at the peak of my career, with good health and strong physically and mentally. I will definitely return”.

Mourinho made these statements after his team’s 2-1 victory in a pre-season friendly against Portimonense in Albufeira, Portugal.

Mourinho left Portugal in the summer of 2004 to join Chelsea, shortly after leading FC Porto to glory in the Champions League. He is currently in his eleventh managerial position and has won 26 major titles in his career with Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Roma. When asked if he would like to continue in the management of clubs or if he would prefer to manage the Portuguese national team, Mourinho replied: “Anything.” Recently, Mourinho denied reports about conversations with executives from the Portuguese Football Federation to become the national team coach for the 2026 World Cup. However, he revealed last year that he had twice turned down the opportunity to coach Portugal. Fenerbahce, under Mourinho’s management, finished as runners-up to Galatasaray in the Turkish Super League last season.
