Trey Smith Signs Million-Dollar Contract with the Chiefs
Star guard Trey Smith and the Kansas City Chiefs have reached an agreement on a four-year, $94 million contract, including $70 million guaranteed. This signing, finalized before the franchise player designation deadline, makes Smith the highest-paid guard in NFL history.
The agreement sets a new record in the league, both in average annual salary and in guaranteed money for a guard.
With Smith and Creed Humphrey, the Chiefs now have the highest-paid guard and center in the NFL. Humphrey’s contract included $50.3 million guaranteed.
Smith, 26, was selected by the Chiefs in the sixth round of the 2021 draft, coming from the University of Tennessee.
Despite initial concerns about a blood clot issue in his lungs during his college years, Smith quickly established himself as a starter at the right guard position in Kansas City, participating in 67 of 68 regular season games in his four years. In addition, he has not missed any playoff games in 13 games.
In 2024, Smith ranked 13th among guards in pass protection success rate (93.9%) and sixth in run block success rate (75.1%, a career high). He only allowed 1.5 sacks and committed two penalties. His performance earned him his first Pro Bowl selection.
In the previous three seasons, Smith remained among the top four guards in pass protection success rate, including second place in 2021 (96.0%) and 2023 (96.6%).
