WIMBLEDON, England – Veronika Kudermetova and Elise Mertens won their first Grand Slam title together by winning the women’s doubles final at Wimbledon on Sunday. In an exciting match on Centre Court, they came back to beat Su-Wei Hsieh and Jelena Ostapenko with scores of 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Kudermetova and Mertens, who faced each other in the 2021 final, joined forces for the first time this year at Wimbledon. Despite being down 4-2 in the third set, they managed to win the last four games to secure the victory. For Mertens, this is her fifth Grand Slam doubles title and her second at Wimbledon. In 2021, alongside Hsieh, she won a marathon final, saving two match points against Kudermetova and Elena Vesnina.
Hsieh, for her part, has won the Wimbledon doubles title four times with three different partners. Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open singles champion, was seeking her second Grand Slam doubles title, after winning the US Open last year with Lyudmyla Kichenok.I lost that final and it was very painful. Today I told myself, I really want it. And now it’s mine.
