Fred VanVleet Elected President of the NBA Players Association

The Houston Rockets’ point guard, Fred VanVleet, has been elected as the new president of the NBA Players Association (NBPA). The election took place on Saturday, marking the beginning of a four-year term for VanVleet. VanVleet succeeds CJ McCollum, a player for the Washington Wizards, who concluded his term as president. During the Players Association Board of Representatives meeting, the vote that designated VanVleet as president took place. McCollum, who led the NBPA for the last four years and was executive vice president from 2018 to 2021, will now take on an advisory role. McCollum led the negotiations to finalize the seven-year collective bargaining agreement in 2023. VanVleet, who was an NBA champion in 2019 with the Toronto Raptors and an All-Star in 2022, is known for having set records in contracts for undrafted players. His experience at different levels of competition makes him a strong advocate for the union. In addition to his success in the NBA, VanVleet also had an outstanding performance in the G League, being a key player on the Raptors 905 championship team in 2017. Recently, VanVleet signed a two-year, $50 million contract to continue his career in Houston.
