Pro Consumidor celebrates 18 years with milestones in user protection

The National Institute for the Protection of Consumer Rights (Pro Consumidor) commemorated its 18th anniversary, highlighting a transformative management that has marked a turning point in the defense of citizens. Under the leadership of Eddy Alcántara, the institution has achieved significant milestones, especially in the recovery of capital for those affected by unfair commercial practices.

Record economic recovery

One of the most relevant points of the current administration is the return of more than RD$3.5 billion to consumers. According to official figures, this amount represents seven times the total sum recovered from the entity’s founding until the year 2021.

We have returned more than 3.5 billion pesos to consumers in the last five years, which is equivalent to seven times what was returned to the consumer from its creation until our arrival.

This increase in conflict resolution is reflected in the daily operations of the institution. While in previous years only a few hearings were held weekly, today the entity manages more than 100 conciliation processes daily, a reflection of the growing trust of the Dominican people in the organization.

Actions against adulterated alcohol and misleading advertising

Another achievement highlighted by the management is the eradication of fatalities from the consumption of adulterated alcohol. Alcántara recalled that, prior to his administration, nearly 68 deaths were recorded annually due to this cause. Thanks to intelligence operations and the dismantling of clandestine factories, this figure has been reduced to zero in the last five years.

  • More than 72 thousand inspections in commercial establishments nationwide.
  • Exhaustive verification of more than 14 thousand advertising pieces to prevent deception.
  • Increased surveillance during high-consumption seasons such as Christmas, Mother’s Day, and Black Friday.
  • Leadership in international consumer protection organizations.

International recognition and trajectory

The impact of Pro Consumidor has transcended Dominican borders. The institution has been recognized by the United Nations for its initiatives in resolving cross-border commercial disputes and protecting users in electronic commerce, establishing itself as a regional benchmark.

The celebration of this 18th anniversary, which had as its central act a thanksgiving mass at the Primatial Cathedral of America, reaffirms Pro Consumidor’s commitment to Law 358-05, which has governed its operations since its launch in September 2008.
