Amazon Prime Air ceases its cargo operations in the Dominican Republic
The e-commerce giant, Amazon, has ended the operations of its air cargo division, Amazon Prime Air, in Dominican territory. The decision became effective in January 2026, marking the end of a cycle that barely reached four months of activity at the Las Américas International Airport (AILA).
The news was confirmed by Luis José López Mena, Director of Corporate Communication for Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom), who clarified that the cessation of flights is strictly due to profitability and market strategy factors.
The reason they stopped operating was commercial, that they did not reach the volume expected to justify the operation, and for that reason they decided to cancel the route.

Factors behind the exit
Amazon Prime Air had started its logistics operations in the country in September 2025, with the goal of strengthening its freight transport network. However, various factors influenced this determination:
- Low cargo volume: The amount of goods moved did not meet the goals projected by the company.
- Economic viability: By not reaching the necessary demand levels, the route ceased to be sustainable for the company.
- Operational adjustments: The company opted to cancel the route after evaluating the financial results of the first months of operation on Dominican soil.
With this move, the company closes its logistics chapter at AILA, leaving behind the efforts initiated at the end of 2025 to position itself in the local air cargo market. Aerodom emphasized that the company’s departure was Amazon’s own decision, based exclusively on its commercial performance analysis.
