Marco Rubio meets with Abelardo de la Espriella to strengthen strategic ties in Colombia
United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio will hold a key meeting this Tuesday in Barranquilla with the President-elect of Colombia, Abelardo de la Espriella. This visit marks a milestone in the diplomatic agenda, as it is the first high-level approach by the Donald Trump administration to the new Colombian government, just weeks before De la Espriella officially assumes power.
Strengthening regional security and bilateral cooperation are the central axes of this meeting, at a time when both countries seek to renew their commitments in critical areas.
Security and anti-narcotics agenda
Combating organized crime will be the main point of the conversations. Under the framework of Colombia’s recent integration into the Coalition Against the Cartels of the Americas, Rubio and De la Espriella will evaluate new strategies to dismantle criminal structures and combat narcoterrorism.
- Military cooperation: Agreements allowing joint operations to strengthen national security will be reviewed.
- Financial support: The $1 billion aid package approved by Washington to strengthen the operational capabilities of the Colombian State will be addressed.
Economic recovery and assistance after the earthquake
The humanitarian crisis resulting from the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that occurred on August 10th, which resulted in the tragic loss of 331 lives, also occupies a priority position. The United States has pledged 26.5 million dollars for emergency and recovery efforts.
President De la Espriella seeks to alleviate the country’s economic pressure following the natural disaster, proposing a temporary suspension of the 12.5% tariffs on Colombian products in the U.S. market.

After finishing his agenda in Colombia, Secretary Marco Rubio will continue his diplomatic tour through Ecuador and Peru. This deployment seeks to consolidate strategic alliances with the governments of Daniel Noboa and Keiko Fujimori, reaffirming the United States’ interest in maintaining political stability and security cooperation throughout the continent.
