Manny Machado Reaches 2,000 Career Hits
In a memorable night for baseball, Manny Machado, star of the San Diego Padres, reached an impressive milestone by hitting his 2,000th hit in his professional career.
The historic hit occurred on Monday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks, with a powerful single that surpassed shortstop Geraldo Perdomo.
The hit, which came in the opening of the fourth inning, was courtesy of Arizona’s starting pitcher, Zac Gallen. The fans present at Petco Park, where Machado has been an idol since his arrival in 2019, gave him a standing ovation.
The All-Star player had already hit a single to left field in the first inning, adding his number 1,999 hit.
Machado joins a select group, being the fifth active player and number 297 in MLB history to reach this mark. In addition, he becomes the twelfth player to achieve 350 home runs and 2,000 hits before turning 33 years old.
Machado debuted in the Major Leagues with the Baltimore Orioles in 2012, where he got 977 hits before being transferred to the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 18, 2018. With the Dodgers, he accumulated 73 hits before signing as a free agent with the Padres on February 21, 2019.
With the Padres, Machado has achieved 950 hits, ranking fifth on the franchise’s all-time list. Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, for example, accumulated 3,141 hits throughout his 20-season career.
This year, Machado was selected as the starting third baseman for the National League team for the All-Star Game.
